The exchange protects one client against their counter party by using the caution deposit collected from the brokers representing the two clients.The exchange also does settlements on a daily basis based on the fluctuations of the price on that day.

Order has to be placed through brokers enlisted by the exchange.They can be either buy or sell order.The order will be valid till the market closes on that day after which if not executed the order will be cancelled.

Long position/unwinding-means that we expect a bullish trend so we have to buy the stocks and then sell later on.
Short position/covering-means that we expect a bearish trend so we have to sell the stock first then cover this position later by buying.

Yes it is possible to buy from BSE and sell in the NSE. But it cannot be done intraday because stocks are not alloted till the close of the market on that day. So the stock can be sold on the NSE only on the next day.
