We can place buy or sell order through the brokers. It may be via online or by a phone call. The brokers deal that order at the stock market.
Buy order or sell order are the two types of orders.

Long position: Buying share for the first time
Short Position: Selling s share which we don’t own and planning to buy it before the settlement in order to utilize the downward price movement of a share.
Long unwinding: Selling a share which we already purchased
Short covering: Buying a share to end the short position
