Moving average is an indicator that gives a smoothening effect on the line graph. If price is above the MA then it is bullish , otherwise it is bearish. It works well during trending periods and not so well during non-trending periods. Usually 21 day average is preferred.

Appears in the non-trending area. Expected to be filled.
Breakout: Start of a trend. Volume is high.
Runaway: Appears in trending phase. Volume is low. Sellers are running away.
Exhaustion: End of a trend. Gap is filled. Volume is low.
