An order can be placed through a trading terminal provided by the stock broker. There are two types of order- buy order(long) and sell order(short). When you are placing a buy order it is upto the buyer to sell at the time he wants to and this has no specific validity, whereas on the other hand if it is a sell or short order, then the order should be squarred off within a day- that is the validity is one day.
