NSE  was started in 1993 as a corporate entity  introducing  electronic trading in India  where a person can trade from the comfort of their office or home .  . The futures and derivatives market was also introduced by NSE. It solved the problem of trading in odd lots and brought it to one.

The BSE was run by an exclusive group of brokers and it was not transparent . The brokers had to go to the market floor with paper to do business. It was only in Mumbai and anyone wanting to trade had to go only through them .

NSE is regulated by the SEBI and is atransparent exchange . This is the reason for its popularity.
