Businesses need capital for its establishment as well as for growth. If the businesses are large and if it can not be funded by few individuals then the capital is raised from the public in lieu of a fraction of ownership called a share. Shares are in the form a certificate setting out the rights of liabilities of the said fraction of ownership. Where one gets shares directly from the companies it is called primary market. Subsequently, if the share holders exchanges the shares among themselves it is called secondary market.
It is overseen by a statutory body called SEBI in order to ensure transparency and to protect the investors’ interest.
Shares are a investment vehicle. It may provide returns through dividends, capital appreciation and through price volatility in the market.
By effective utilization of stocks as an investment vehicle one can maximize one’s return on their capital employed. It requires Knowledge and discipline.
There are two main exchanges in India which allows trading in shares. They are BSE and NSE.
Both these exchanges have their own representative index called SENSEX and NIFTY. It is computed based on the performances of top companies in the market. Similarly, there are numerous sector specific indexes to track the performances on a continuous basis.
