Meaning – Green washing is the act of misleading customers to believe that a product or services is environment friendly.

Statement – Company XYZ produces a new line of plastic food containers. It labels the containers “tree friendly” because they are not made from wood or forest products. This creates the thought that the company is not harming nature to make the food containers, in fact it is using petroleum products that many are more harmful to the environment. Company XYZ is attempting to Greenwash its products.

Greenwashing – The practice of companies making their products appear to be environmentally sound by putting them in green packages, claiming they are biodegradable (when they are not), etc.

Greenwashing is a marketing technique whereby a company falsely claims to have taken environment friendly actions in manufacturing their products. In reality, they spend more on advertising their go green initiative, rather than implementing it. It is very misleading for consumers who want to live Eco-friendly . So, beware of greenwashing!!!

Eg: In 2009, European McDonald’s changed the colour of their logos from yellow and red to yellow and green; a spokesman for the company explained that the change was “to clarify [their] responsibility for the preservation of natural resources.”

Green washing is the practice of making an unsubstantiated or misleading claim about the environmental benefits of a product or service or technology.

EG : green washing (a compound word modelled on whitewash ” or “green sheen is a form of spin in which green PR or green marketing is deceptively used  to promote the perception that an organisation  products ,aims or policies are environmentally friendly.
