SEBI is a regulator who oversees any insider trading that happens and if SEBI finds any investor who indulges in any malpractices like leaking of sensitive info of company or quaterly reports to gain out of share market then it can ban or disqualify the investor and take appropriate action.

Hence SEBI regulates the functions of stock market and safeguards the rights of the general public.

SEBI is the authority  which regulates the companies that are listed in stock exchange. It monitors the righteousness of the company(not the profitability of the company). The company is restricted to offend shareholders.
