A stock market acts as a platform for buyers and sellers to meet and trade their shares. A stock market is required to buy & sell shares, commodities and other securities.

Once you have bought shares of a company, you cannot get a refund from the company as the company would have invested your money into the company.  So that you can sell your shares or exchange them you need a platform/ place; that platform is the stock market.
