DEMAT stands for dematerialized account.   Any one who would like to share trade, should open a demat account with any authorized share trading broker.  Only through this account we are authorized to do share trading.

Demat account is a depository for dematerialised  share certificates. It is a space on a hard disk allotted to a certain client ,where all the shares purchased can be stored or instantly moved to the next new buyer of that share without any physical transfer of any paper. Demat account is essential for investment and holding shares for a short period. For intraday trading it is not required.

DEMAT a/c is for dematerialisation of shares.

Dematerialisation is the process by which physical certificates of an investor are converted to an equivalent number of securities in electronic form.

It is an account wherein it holds the shares in the electronic form. It is just like a bank account, but this is used for storing of shares etc. This is also called dematerialized account wherein instead of the having them in paper format, shares are held in the electronic format.
