BSE came first but NSE took the privilege in expanding the types of markets in india i.e by bringing predictive market and bond market (futures and options market) . This allowed investors to trade in multiple ways and thus became popular.

NSE generally trades the top 50 companies and those are which cannot be manipulate easily because of its top 50 companies volumes and turnover are higher then BSE top 30 companies and so anyone can trade with higher confident in NSE than BSE.So it become popular than BSE.
