DEMAT a/c – Dematerialized Account. It is the account in which the shares get stored electronically after the T2 day of holding.

It is like a bank account where shares are accounted for the individual.

DEMAT a/c means DeMaterialized account where shares are maintained in electronic format, not in materialized format –  ex certificates.

Its an account which holds my shares in electronic form. It holds my financial instruments like shares, mutual fund, bonds etc

Demat account is opened by me by registering with a Investment broker

Basically its an electronic storage in which shares and securities are maintained electronically eliminating the trouble of handling paper share.

<span style=”color: #222222; font-family: sans-serif;”><span style=”font-size: 14px;”>Securities (Stocks, mutual funds, ETF etc.) are held electronically in a dematerialized ( Demat ) account, instead of the investor taking physical possession of certificates. A Demat account is opened by the investor while registering with an investment broker.</span></span>
