    DMAT a/c is De materialized account

    It is a storage device (example:harddisk) which stores the shares bought by the trader in electronic format

    Earlier stocks were maintained in physical storage (example:certificate,papers etc.,), now its moved to electronic format

     

    NSDL (National Securities Depositories Limited) / CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited) are the depositories in India

    One more information, SEBI provides free DMAT account (Basic Services Demat Account) if the transaction limit is up to 50k, if its 50k to 2L yearly account holders have to pay  fee 100k, duplicate BSDA accounts are not allowed by SEBI its now tracked to PAN

    A Demat a/c is an account where the shares traded are stored(ONLINE a/c for holding shares). For any shareholder it is necessary to hold a demat a/c and a trading a/c so as to buy, sell and hold his/her shares.

    Account which is used for trading the shares electronically is called DEMAT a/c..
