A broker can trade for himself as a Trader. But a Trader cannot play the role of broker. Is my understanding is correct. ie., even though if a person registered as a broker with a particular exchange, he can be part of trading for his own buy/sell of stocks.
Yes you are correct. Trader cannot play the role of broker, because it need regulatory approval and exchange membership to carry our broking services. If any broker trade with their own membership in the exchange, then the particular trades are disclosed under Proprietary trading
