Analysing the amount of risk and returns involved inside, the stock trading can be determined as gambling or business.
If risk is greater than return, it is gambling. In other way, if returns are greater than risk involved, then it is business. -

When a company wants to acquire more capital, it divides the capital into equity and sells it to the share holders by a face value. This is called as the Initial Public offering of the company, and it is a only one and first time offering of the company. A company cannot invest all money on its own, so it gets money from people in form of shares. The place where the stocks are priced, bought and sold between people is called sock market. It can be otherwise called stock market/stock exchange.
