Dow theory is mainly used to understand trend of stock or market or index. it is mainly related to identify Demand and Supply. this theory is base of technical analysis. line charts are used mainly for last 2 years and find out major tops and bottoms. But this cant show behavior of stock for particular time frame or short duration so have some limitations.
