Closing Bell: Nifty close with minimal losses despite sharp sell-off over 200 points

A heavy bout of selling in afternoon deals saw the NSE index slip into the negative zone to touch a low of 11,830 – down over 200 points from the day’s high amid volatile trading dragged mainly by banking, auto and metal indices. The Nifty finally ended with a minor loss of 23 points at 11,922 on Friday but closed the week 0.7 per cent higher. Investors remained cautious ahead of Q4 GDP data due later in the day today.

All sectoral indices, except the Nifty IT, ended the day in the red. The Nifty PSU Banks lost the most, down 1.3 percent followed by Media, Metal and Auto sectors.

Market Update: Nifty trade volatile; Banking & Metal stocks decline

The broader NSE Nifty were trading 35 points lower at 11,911 level. Domestic equity benchmark Nifty slipping below the 11,900 mark in afternoon session tracking losses in power, metal and financial stocks.

The market breadth was negative on the NSE with 559 shares advancing, 1,224 shares declining, and 89 remaining unchanged.

The Volatility gauge, India VIX is up 4.14% at 16.25.

Morning Update: Nifty above 12,000 mark led by gains in IT & Finance stocks

The broader NSE Nifty crossed the 12,000 level, and was trading 68 points higher at 12,013 on Friday. Nifty approached their all-time highs in early trade today, as markets cheer return of the Narendra Modi as India’s Prime Minister for a second term on hopes of a stable government amid strong foreign fund inflow.

Most of the sectoral indices were trading on a positive note. Nifty IT gained the most, ~1 percent followed by Nifty FMCG and Nifty Finance up 0.5 percent each.
