Closing Bell: Nifty Post First Weekly Gain Since Mid-July

The broader NSE Nifty jumped 77 points to 11,109 levels. Key equity index nifty ended with gains for the second consecutive session and recorded their first weekly gain since mid-July, amid optimism that the government may roll-back hike in FPI surcharge tax.

Six of 11 sector gauges compiled by National Stock Exchange ended higher led by the Nifty Auto Index’s 2 percent gain. Nifty Financial Services, Bank and Private Bank sector gauges also rose between 1 and 1.5 percent each.  On the flipside, Nifty Metal Index was the top loser, down 0.86 percent.

India bulls Housing, Eicher Motors, Titan, Maruti Suzuki and Bajaj FinServ were among major gainers on the Nifty, while losers were Yes Bank, Cipla, Hindalco Industries, Tech Mahindra and Coal India.

Meanwhile, Asian markets finished mixed as positive sentiment from a strong day on Wall Street was offset by resurfacing trade tensions.

Bank shares gain

Nifty Bank index was trading 1.14 per cent up at 28,438.40 around 02:10 pm. Bank shares were trading in the positive zone in Friday’s session, shares of RBL Bank (up 3.64 per cent) followed by IDFC First Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Federal Bank.

Morning Update: Nifty regains 11,100 mark

The broader Nifty50 index added 0.7 percent, to 11,108 levels. The headline index Nifty regained 11,100, with banking and auto stocks leading the gains while some buying was also seen in metal, pharma and energy stocks. Investor’s sentiment boosted after the reports that the government is likely to withdraw higher surcharge on foreign portfolio investors amidst strong global cues.

India bulls Housing, Power Grid, Ultratech Cement, Grasim, and HDFC Bank were the top gainers on the Nifty50 index while Bharti Airtel, Yes Bank, Tata Motors, ITC, IOC, and Coal India were trading in the red.

Meanwhile, Asian markets were trading higher today after a strong session on Wall Street.
